Just bursting to tell you!

This 'between dogs' thing is going to be short lived......

If you read to the end of my previous post, you'll know that I went to see some wire haired fox terrier puppies at the weekend.

And......

At four and a bit weeks old, they were JUST GORGEOUS!

One wee chappie in particular stole my heart:

And from another angle:

I saw the mum and dad too. Here are the pups with mum, who seems very sweet natured.

Home is a family run kennels, and all the puppies are already used to being handled by the owners' five young children. I'm no expert on dog breeding, but everything I saw indicated that this is a 'good home', not just someone out to make a quick buck. If you're interested, click here for their website.

Well I left the kennels with my friend Marie-Therese, pretending I hadn't made up my mind. We then spent the fifty minute drive back to Aberdeen discussing a suitable name. A phone call shortly after I arrived back home sealed the deal.

In one month's time, I shall be driving north again to pick up.........

..........Bertie!

So. A new challenge, my first ever puppy. (Hamish was nearly four years old when I adopted him).

I'm very excited and a tiny wee bit nervous. Your advice will be most welcome!

Gail,

I'm so happy for you - I looked at the website and the kennel looks spectacular. And all of those children to socialize the puppies.

My best advice would be to crate train and leash train. Don't be nervous - you had a great teacher in your beloved Hamish.

Looking forward to the new adventures with you little Bertie.

Ohhhhhh!!!! We are just bursting out in a smile!!!! What wonderful news!!!! Bertie and Butchy's new little sister must be almost exactly the same age! All these little WFT puppies in blogland! And Scotties! And ... oh ... we are so happy!!!

We're too excited to write more, but you can be sure we'll be walking around with a smile.

Enjoy the next few weeks of anticipation! Sit back and remember all those nice quiet times with Hamish - and all that he taught you. Life is about to change (though there will still be nice quiet times with a sleeping puppy in your arms!)

Gail!!! Congratulations - how adorable is Bertie! I feel I want to start knitting............!
Seriously he look gorgeous and I think having a puppy will be wonderful.
I always want a puppy - anytime I see them!
Even as a child - doesn't actually matter what breed they are.
I will visit the website but I always reckon your gut instinct is the one to trust and you seem to be happy with everything.
They tell you to see the parents etc and it all sound great.
Oh this will be a long four weeks for us to wait!
Anyway in the meantime you can start puppy proofing the house!

Gail,

We too are bursting with expectation for you. As you will certainly find out, we wire fox terriers jump for joy at the slightest provocation -- and this is truly more than a slight reason!!!

I (Jake) was three and a half months when I was brought home -- and my folks didn't have a clue as to what to do with a puppy!!! After what we fondly like to call "Black Friday" -- (don't ask) --they learned that crate training was the best. Walks every few hours, a brief time out to explore the house and play, then back into the crate. And not a big crate -- just one big enough for me but not big enough for me and a "pooping parlor." If you get my drift.

After a few months, I had learned my manners and unlocked my crate myself -- and the rest is history.

We are very very happy for you!!!

Congrats, Gail and Welcome Bertie (oh, how I love the name!) I'm not a good one for housebreaking advice, my last one I got as a puppy and just put him outside every while with an older dog we had. She had him trained in no time at all. You'll work it out just fine.

Bertie is a beauty!

Cheers and hugs,

Jo and Stella

Moma is just so excited, she had to come back and share the enthusiasm with everyone else!

Here's what she told us (you know we came as adults ... and ... well ... "housebreaking" was a bit different for us). She used crate training with her second wire (didn't know about it with her first.) And she actually used two crates. A quite small one when Molly was a puppy and a larger one once she was full-grown. Molly LOVED her crate ... (til she discovered the bed) and went to it often, just to "home in." (Still ... once she was housebroken ... or probably even before ... she slept on the big bed, just like we do!)

Oh, we are so happy for you!

Now ... 'cause of all the happiness and excitement, Jake got a bit too excited ... and ... well ... his very sensitive belly just called for some carpet cleaning. Oh well. Babies puke all the time, too. She still loves us!

Keep us posted!
Love
Fergi (and Jake ... who is now on the deck recovering!)

Pamela Terry and Edward said...

Oh, this makes me smile. The happiest news I've heard since passage of the US health care bill.

We adopted Edward at just under a year, so he wasn't really a puppy, per se. But when we realized how much he liked playing with other dogs, we adopted Apple, who was most definitely a puppy. It was so much fun! We did get a soft crate for her to sleep in at night, something we'd never done before. It was a huge help in housebreaking, and she seemed to really like it a lot. She slept in it every night till her feet began to touch the top when she turned over! She often sleeps with us, and Edward, now.

Puppies are the most fun I can possibly think of, and Bertie is the absolute best name!! I look forward to "meeting" him properly!! Congratulations.

Bertie is a perfect name for such a spunky little pup! We are anxiously awaiting her arrival, and very much look forward to getting to know her :)

Well this is most exciting. Momma says to tell you that the worst time for her with Angus the Airedale was when he was a teenager. He ate through a wall, shredded a couch, destroyed her video tape collection, and consume a large part of a carpet pad. Nom, nom, nom. But she says she would get another terrier in a heartbeat if Master agreed.

I just heard
What fantastic , wonderful news...Asta is beside herself with gleee another dear baby puppy to love.
We of course adore the name Bertie (Myrna our wheelie named hew baby boy that)
Your Bertie looks precious and gorgeous and I just know Hamish approves and will help direct you to do exactly the pawfect thing.
We also recommend crate training..Asta never makes a mistake unless not well with some upsets. and you should have a much easier time than we had with training Asta in winter from a seventh floor apartment, hehehe

We are overjoyed!!!for you Gail

Hi Gail,

We've been following Hamish's blog to here.

Congrats on the imminent arrival of your future 4-legged friend. We found out that having a puppy was quite hard work - enjoyable though. Just a bit of advice (among many things): save your shoes and puppy proof your backyard.

Bertie is a cute little thing. We're all happy for you here at Our house. Puppies are great fun.

She tells me all the time how, when I was a wee one, I learned quickly how to go outside, stay at the curb and stay. Practice, practice, practice. The key is repetition! And praise for a job well done.

Bertie'll get the hang of it.

Come over and visit our bloggie...Musmie drove yesterday to Ohio to visit the litter where Butchy is getting his sissy from...it's Scruffy's breeder...total cuteness of these babies...they will be five weeks old tomorrow!

I thought Mumsie would stuff 'em all in her purse, but she behaved...somehow!

Come and see the pix!

Scruffy, Lacie and Stanny and their Mumsie

Dear Bertie...

This is Lacie. Now, I know I have a bit of a reputation on the bloggie, but I want you to know I can be sweet at times. Are you going to DATE MY GOD DAUGHTER? Butchy's sissy? I just need to know when so I can get her outfit together...a sweet romper is appropriate for a young girlie like that...

Somedog needs to chaperone...you two are much too young....

Kisses,

Laciegirlie

I'll be looking forward to Bertie's 'point of view' on life. Congrats. (As far as housebreaking goes, I remember being outside in the backyard in my robe at wee hours of the night with my MAX...)

Hi Gail, We're reading backwards, so just saw this post with the photos. He is SO sweet. Ahhh Spring is the time for new life isn't it?! Our mommy found that kennel trainging was an excellent way to go with a puppy. I,BRD, was kennel trained and trained in no time flat with hardly a mess on the floor ever. Hootie she didn't use the kennel with and it took about 6 months before he was potty trained!! Lucky for us we have tile floors in both places.
We wish you the best with your new little guy when you get him.

Hey Ms. Gail,
Just remember that patience is a virtue. With a young puppy you will need to very virtuous.
Congratulations mom on your pending arrival.
